Time and time again, students write me expressing their desire to play piano by ear!
Well, it isn’t MAGIC!
You must familiarize yourself with the keyboard… knowing music theory helps too!
To put it simply, you have to experiment and use your EARS!
I created an accompaniment track for your follow-up practice!
This popular 70’s dance song is an exploration in Dominant Harmony!
The E Dominant 7th chord (E7) chord is spelled: E G# B D
The E Dominant 7th scale (E7) scale is spelled: E F# G# A B C# D E
Try using one or two of the notes above to create your own riffs or melodies!
PLEASE NOTE: You MUST experiment with the sound of your creations to assure that they are appropriate for the song, harmonically and rhythmically!
HERE’S A BIG TIP: Whatever you come up with… try to REPEAT it!
99% of the time, if it SOUNDS good… it is GOOD!
Have FUN!
Hi Ron,
Thanks for the free lessons. Your lessons has encouraged me to reall;y get into my music. Do you have gospel courses by ear. I tried the book and know most of the basics. My dream and goals, are to play aat my church before this year is out. I am now ready to start my 1 year lesson for the 15 dollars a month, I know I can handle that.
Geri
Hi Geri…
When you understand keyboard harmony, you will understand what notes to incorporate in your harmonies to play ANYTHING by ear!
Ron
Thanks for the lesson. I have a problem trying to put chords together along with a melody in making a song. Help.
Hi Lacy…
It sounds like you’re limited in your knowledge of keyboard harmony!
Without knowing your background, it’s very difficult for me to help you… I mean do you know the families of CHORDS?
If you study common “chord progressions,” you will instinctively start hearing melodies to create with specific chord progressions. As your ears develop, you will be able to add harmonies to your crafted melodies!
Just remember, music is MATHEMATICS! I can help you, but you must learn the fundamentals!
To your success,
Ron
I was looking forward to video that illustrates how to develop both your fine and gross motor skills to play piano! But I can’t find it. Can you direct me to that video.
thank you
Nikki
